Why naming matters
Industrial scouring pads have been made in China for more than 20 years and were long seen as a low-value, niche traditional industry. Because category names were never unified, buyers often ran into "same name, different product" problems during quotation, testing and contract acceptance: a single term could mean either a household sponge scouring pad or an industrial non-woven abrasive cloth.
Where the name comes from
In 2024 industry players led the drafting of the relevant technical standard, and the National Technical Committee for Abrasives Standardization formally named these products "coated abrasive non-woven cloth", laying the groundwork for standardization. The name places industrial scouring pads clearly within coated abrasives and draws a clean boundary with consumer cleaning products.
Consumer vs industrial pads
- Consumer scouring pads: primarily for cleaning and degreasing in kitchens, bathrooms, tableware and household surfaces, usually sanded, needle-punched or resin-bonded pads laminated to sponge.
- Industrial pads (coated abrasive non-woven cloth): primarily for grinding, polishing and surface treatment in metal finishing, precision polishing, chip packaging, high-end PCB surface treatment and automotive topcoat blending.

The unified naming gives buyers a clearer reference for price comparison, testing and acceptance.
